Airside and ground operations, UK wide
Aviation Health and Safety
Aviation runs on a rigorous safety culture but the workplace risks on the ground are just as real as those in the air. AL23 Safety provides occupational health and safety support for aviation businesses across the UK, from ground handling and baggage operations to maintenance and airside services. We help you protect your people and meet your duties as an employer.
Why it matters in aviation
The risks are real and so are the duties
Aircraft safety is tightly regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority but that sits alongside your separate duty to keep staff safe at work. Apron and hangar environments are busy, noisy and full of moving vehicles and heavy loads.
Our role is the occupational health and safety side, complementing the safety management systems the CAA expects rather than duplicating them.
The main risks
Where the harm comes from
The hazards that cause the most serious harm in this sector and the ones we focus on first.
Airside vehicle movements
Tugs, loaders and ground support equipment around people and aircraft.
Manual handling
Repetitive baggage and cargo handling causing musculoskeletal injury.
Noise
Sustained exposure on the apron and around engines.
Working at height
Access to aircraft, tail docks and maintenance platforms.
Hazardous substances
Fuels, de-icing fluids, solvents and paints under COSHH.
The regulations that apply
Your legal framework, in plain terms
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 governs your duties to employees and others, supported by PUWER 1998, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, the Work at Height Regulations 2005, COSHH 2002 and RIDDOR 2013. These run in parallel with the aviation safety requirements overseen by the CAA.
Key duties commonly engaged:
- HSWA 1974
- PUWER 1998
- Noise 2005
- Work at Height 2005
- COSHH 2002
- RIDDOR 2013
