Environmental Management
Managing your environmental impact is no longer optional. Customers, regulators and investors all expect it. Getting it right cuts cost and risk at the same time. AL23 Safety helps businesses across the UK build practical environmental management systems, achieve and maintain ISO 14001 and stay on the right side of environmental law.
What is environmental management?
Managing your impact on purpose, not by accident
Environmental management is the way you identify, control and reduce the impact your business has on the environment. That means looking at your energy use, waste, emissions, water and resources, then putting systems in place to manage them well.
An Environmental Management System or EMS, gives this structure. It sets out clear responsibilities, targets and procedures so environmental performance is something you manage on purpose, not something that happens by accident.
ISO 14001
The international standard, now in its 2026 edition
ISO 14001 gives you a recognised framework to reduce waste and pollution, use resources more efficiently, meet your legal duties and show stakeholders that you take the environment seriously.
ISO 14001:2015
The previous edition. If you are already certified, your certificate stays valid through the transition.
ISO 14001:2026
The new edition replaced 2015, keeping the same core structure while sharpening the language and putting more weight on climate and environmental performance.
Transition ends
The three year transition period closes. Now is a sensible time to plan your move to the new edition.
Whether you are seeking certification for the first time or moving from the 2015 to the 2026 edition, we can guide you through it.
One thing worth knowing: the certificate itself is awarded by an independent, accredited certification body, not by your consultant. What we do is get you ready, build the system, prepare your documentation and support you through the audit so you pass with confidence.
Your legal obligations
It applies to more businesses than people expect
Environmental law in the UK is wide ranging. Depending on what you do, you may have duties under several Acts and regulations, among others.
- Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Environment Act 2021
- Environmental Permitting Regulations 2016
We help you work out exactly what applies to you and how to meet it without overcomplicating things.
Waste duty of care
You are responsible for how your waste is stored, handled and disposed of.
Emissions control
Many businesses need to control emissions to air, land and water.
Environmental permits
Some activities need a specific environmental permit to operate.
